Poker Legends: Pierre Noyville and Tor Hansen Defy Age and Adversity
Pierre Noyville, a Belgian poker veteran, has had a notable career despite not having any major victories. His most significant win was $79,080 at the Deep Stack Extravaganza in Venetian. However, he has come close to winning big three times, losing in the heads-up rounds on each occasion. In 2009, he lost $383,962 at the EPT Vilamoura; in 2012, he missed out on $282,843 at the EPT Copenhagen; and in 2014, he narrowly missed a $385,041 prize at the World Series of Poker.
Noyville's journey into tournament poker began several years ago, but his story is marked by a profound personal challenge. After being diagnosed with cancer, he underwent six surgeries, two of which were unsuccessful. During his most difficult days, confined to a hospital bed, Noyville made a promise to his wife: if he survived, he would quit his job and return to poker. His wife, unaware of his past poker involvement, thought he was delirious. However, Noyville had a history of playing poker in the 1960s to fund his university education. After his recovery, he resumed his poker career and has since won a total of $2,178,392. In 2014, he received the PokerListings 'Living Legend' award, a honor he cherishes deeply.
Tor Hansen, known as the 'godfather of Norwegian poker,' has had a long and successful career. He won his first WSOP bracelet in 1988 in a $5,000 seven-card stud championship. Despite being diagnosed with terminal cancer three years ago and given a maximum of six months to live, Hansen continues to play and defy medical expectations. His resilience and continued participation in poker tournaments serve as an inspiration to many.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
