Poker Bots Spark Controversy: Players Debate the Future of Online Poker

In early October, information surfaced on the German forum PokerStrategy that bots were being used in the William Hill poker room, part of the iPoker network.

The iPoker network confirmed that the accounts in question were already under suspicion and many had been blocked. The network also clarified that bots are only used in games like dominoes, and players are informed about this in advance.

Justin Bonomo stated that in about 10 years, online poker will become unplayable due to artificial intelligence and bots. He compared this to the impact of AI on games like backgammon and chess, where human players no longer stand a chance against the best computers. BLdSWtTRs disagreed, stating that bots would not be able to beat 2/4 NL with a full stack for at least 20 years. Justin Bonomo argued that the principles of the human brain will be deciphered sooner, and computers will become much more powerful. Cole South expressed doubt that bots could beat $2/4 NL with a full stack. Daniel Cates mentioned that currently, there are no bots at high limits, and their presence would be immediately obvious. Peter Jetten claimed that bots already exist and have won millions at limits from 2/4 to 10/20. Justin Smith agreed with Peter Jetten, suggesting a collective effort to combat bots at medium limits. Ben Sulsky argued that past trends do not necessarily predict the future, using an analogy about population growth. Tom Dwan highlighted that poker is a game of incomplete information, making it challenging for bots to excel.
