Pius Heinz on Winning Big: 'I Won't Buy Anything Ridiculous'
Pius Heinz, a professional poker player, recently won a significant tournament on the European Poker Tour in Barcelona. This victory marked a pivotal moment in his career, as he became the first German to win the main tournament and reach the final table.
Heinz discussed his preparation for the tournament, mentioning that he took lessons from Mike “Timex” McDonald to improve his ICM (Independent Chip Model) and mathematical understanding of the game. Despite his strategic preparation, Heinz faced challenges during the final table, expressing frustration over not having good hands. He noted that his friend Martin Stajko often received strong combinations on the flop, making his own situation difficult.
Following his victory, Heinz joined PokerStars as a professional, becoming a team member alongside notable players such as Chris Moneymaker, Joe Hachem, Joe Cada, Jonathan Duhamel, Daniel Negreanu, and Barry Greenstein. When asked about his future plans, Heinz expressed a desire to help his family with his winnings but emphasized that he does not plan to buy anything extravagant.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
