Phil Ivey's 2005: A Year of Triumphs and Insights

In 2005, Phil Ivey had a remarkable year in poker. He won the Monte Carlo Millions tournament, with one of the final hands becoming his signature move. Additionally, he won his 5th bracelet in the $5,000 PLO tournament at the 2005 WSOP, defeating Robert Williamson in the heads-up.

Ivey was named Player of the Year by Bluff Magazine in 2005, leading the competition by nearly 100 points. However, he expressed disappointment after exiting the main event of the 2005 WSOP in 20th place, stating that he felt he could have performed better. He mentioned that he played only 7 tournaments during the 2005 WSOP but plans to play more in the following year.

Ivey shared insights into his poker journey, revealing that he learned to play poker at the age of 8 from his grandfather, who taught him five-card stud. At 17, he used fake documents to play in Atlantic City casinos, starting at $1/$3 and $1/$5 limits. He learned poker by observing successful players and through trial and error. Ivey moved to Vegas primarily for the high-stakes games and expressed that he does not seek media attention, preferring to focus on his poker career. He attributes his success to his ability to read opponents and make correct decisions. In his free time, Ivey enjoys playing golf and basketball, traveling, and dining out with his wife.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
