Phil Galfond Unveils Free Poker Variance Calculator with Unique Features

Phil Galfond, the BetRivers Poker ambassador, has launched a free variance calculator for poker players. The tool provides mathematical and statistical expectations in terms of upswings and downswings based on the player's perceived win rate.

The calculator includes features such as calculating variance in different backing deals, showing what both the player and the backer can expect based on the provided information. It allows users to enter parameters such as blinds, winrate, standard deviation, sample size, and bankroll to see different possible outcomes.

The Downswings tab helps users understand the likelihood of experiencing a downswing based on their parameters. The Bankroll tab assists in determining the size of the bankroll needed based on risk tolerance. The Backing section provides insights into staking arrangements, including expected wins and the backer's risk of ruin.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
