Phil Galfond Reevaluates the Role of Solvers in Poker Strategy
Phil Galfond, a top poker player, has been playing the game long before solvers became popular. Before solvers, poker players used software for analyzing hand statistics and equity calculations. These programs were useful but lacked the ability to provide definitive answers.
Solvers, on the other hand, use a method of full enumeration to find unbeatable strategies. This method provides players with correct answers, a significant shift from the previous reliance on logic and personal judgment. Galfond initially avoided using solvers for Pot-Limit Omaha because they were not available for this variant. He also felt intimidated by the complex interfaces of early solvers, preferring to rely on his own strategies and analysis.
Galfond's return to poker was influenced by a conversation with his psychologist and hypnotherapist Elliot Roe. Elliot Roe helped Galfond identify a destructive mindset called 'Too Smart to Try' that hindered his progress. This mindset, formed during his school days, made him reluctant to put in the effort required to excel with solvers. Galfond's insights and experiences highlight the evolving landscape of poker strategy and the challenges players face in adapting to new tools and methodologies.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
