Phil Galfond on Emotions and Logic in Poker and Life
Phil Galfond has been playing poker for over 20 years and initially tried to approach the game purely logically, inspired by David Sklansky's books. He aimed to become a robot-like player, suppressing any emotions that could affect his decisions. However, with the help of his mental coach, Tommy Angelo, Galfond learned to recognize and interpret his emotions, realizing that they were an essential part of his game.
Galfond discusses a scenario where he felt discomfort and fear during a poker hand. This emotional response helped him make a better decision by providing additional information that he might have missed if he had ignored his feelings. He advises players to recognize and analyze their emotions during games to find better logical solutions. However, he cautions against confusing emotions with intuition, which is based on experience and can be trusted if the player has enough of it.
In another example, Galfond explains that emotions are signals and should be analyzed rather than acted upon immediately. He uses a group conversation to illustrate how emotions can influence perceptions and reactions. In this scenario, one person's story about buying a car for their mother triggered feelings of envy and resentment in others, leading to a divided opinion among the group. Galfond suggests that understanding the underlying emotions can help in making more informed decisions and avoiding unnecessary conflicts.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
