Phil Galfond on His Downswing: 'I Can't Make Myself Think on Lower Limits'

Phil Galfond, a renowned poker player, is currently experiencing a significant downswing, losing around $1.7 million. Galfond's biggest losses came from playing $1,500/3,000 in 2-7 Triple Draw, a game he is new to.

According to HSDB, Galfond lost $2,139,922 over 31,179 hands in HORSE. Additionally, he lost $440,954 over 1,287 hands in 2-7 Triple Draw. Galfond mentions that he does not spend hours analyzing hands in HEM or calculating equity, stating that he finds these activities tedious and distracting.

Despite his losses, Galfond agrees with Patrick's sentiment that more players should challenge themselves in mixed games. He acknowledges that while he agrees with Patrick's philosophy, he also recognizes the practical difficulties that most online players face in implementing this approach.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
