Online Poker Boom: Experts Weigh In on Traffic, Competition, and Future

The online poker industry is experiencing a boom, but has it reached its peak? Robby Strausinsky, a prominent figure in the industry, believes that while there is a surge in online poker, it seems to have passed its peak. He raised concerns about the sufficiency of players and money in the poker ecosystem.

Phil Galfond, however, disagreed with the notion that there is less money in poker. He stated that there are more players now than in previous years. Galfond attributed the issues faced by some poker rooms to overestimating their expectations due to the influx of new players. He highlighted that the traffic in cash games grows annually by 25%, and even more in Multi-Table Tournaments (MTTs).

Rob Yong attributed the outflow of money from poker to regulators, stating that players from different regions cannot play against each other due to restrictions. He mentioned that the main cause of money leaving poker is the regulatory environment, which prevents players from different countries from competing against each other. Yong also discussed the competitive dynamics among poker rooms, comparing it to a game of 'king of the hill' where rooms are trying to outdo each other with guarantees. He noted that PartyPoker, his affiliated room, can no longer offer the same guarantees as before due to regulatory pressures.
