Moldovan Poker Player Wins $10,000 Tournament Amid Cheating Allegations
Valery Koka, a Moldovan poker player, won a $10,000 heads-up tournament by defeating Mett Marafioti, Pratush Buddiga, Aaron Mermeistein, Connor Drinan, and Byron Caverman. His victory sparked allegations of cheating from several players and observers.
Connor Drinan, one of the players defeated by Koka, expressed his frustration and suspicion about Koka's playing style on the 2+2 forum. Drinan described Koka's strategy as slow and passive at the beginning of the match, then becoming aggressive. Pratush Buddiga, another player who faced Koka, also noted this unusual playing style.
Koka was suspected of marking cards and using invisible ink and special dark glasses. He was reported to be on the blacklist of Czech casinos for cheating. Jack Effel, the tournament director of WSOP, confirmed that an investigation is ongoing. Daniel Negreanu, a prominent poker player, criticized the use of dark glasses in poker, suggesting they should be banned. A Czech regular on the 2+2 forum recalled Koka's aggressive play and marking of cards in a Prague casino. Czech poker journalist Martin Kuharek confirmed the story about Koka's cheating in Prague casinos.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
