Maurice Hawkins Wins WSOP Circuit Ring Amidst Controversial Hand

Maurice Hawkins won the 18th WSOP Circuit ring on March 3, 2025, earning $140,752. After his win, Hawkins confidently stated, 'I always win. You can seat me with anyone. I am the most stable player who has ever lived.' This confidence is backed by his consistent performance, with 15 cashes in 2025 in tournaments ranging from $130 to $1,700 buy-ins.

However, Hawkins' victory was overshadowed by a controversial hand. During the final, Diwyam Satyarthi pushed all-in from the small blind with KQ, and Hawkins called with 78 on the big blind. The dealer quickly mucked Satyarthi's cards and awarded the pot to Hawkins, who had a wheel. The flush was missed by everyone, leading to a strange situation where Satyarthi, who finished third, initially thought his pair held up.

Poker.org reporter Jeff McMillan noted the error, stating that the flush was missed by everyone. The debate over whether a reporter should intervene in such situations sparked intense discussion. Offline regular D.J. McKinnon argued that a reporter should remain silent, while Carter King disagreed, stating that any error should be reported. Brad Willis, the chief editor of Poker.org, stated that journalists should never intervene during a hand. Conversely, Matt Savage, a respected tournament director, encouraged journalists to report errors during hands. Sean McCormick, the director of strategy and poker development at MGM, believes that poker media should not intervene during hands. Patrick Leonard concluded that the tournament director was at fault for not intervening in the controversial hand.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
