Jens Killonen Criticizes ICM Model in Poker Tournaments

Jens Killonen, a well-known figure in the poker world, has been living as a poker pensioner while actively engaging in trading. However, he still occasionally participates in both online and offline poker games. In 2019, during the SCOOP series, Killonen finished in 5th place in a $10,300 buy-in PLO tournament.

In a recent blog post, Killonen criticized the Independent Chip Model (ICM), a model used to calculate the expected value of chips in tournament poker. He argues that the ICM model assumes equal win rates for all players, which is not realistic in tournament settings. Killonen believes that the leader on the final table has a significant advantage due to the ability to pressure other players.

Killonen also introduced the concept of 'image equity,' which refers to the perception opponents have of a player's style. He uses this to his advantage by making decisions that influence his opponents' perceptions, thereby gaining an edge in the game. He discussed several hands from his tournament, including one where he opened with AK53r from the small blind, another with 5443dd on the big blind, and a third with AQJTss on the button. Each of these hands illustrates his strategic approach and the use of 'image equity' to manipulate his opponents' decisions.
