From Poker Tables to Pub Ownership: James Aikenhead's Journey
James Aikenhead, a seasoned poker player, once found himself in a prolonged losing streak while playing at Vic Casino. This period of uncertainty led him to question his future in poker and eventually inspired him to open a pub. His journey from poker tables to pub ownership is a tale of resilience and adaptation.
In 2008, James Aikenhead finished third in the main tournament of the Grosvenor United Kingdom Poker Tour (GUKPT) in Newcastle, earning £23,625. This significant win boosted his confidence and bankroll, setting the stage for his future poker endeavors. Later that year, he reached the heads-up stage in a $1,500 no-limit hold'em tournament at the World Series of Poker (WSOP), facing Grant Hinkle. Despite losing the heads-up, Aikenhead won nearly $700,000 in prize money that year, marking a remarkable achievement in his poker career.
Following his success, Aikenhead formed a poker team called The Hit Squad with Chaz and Sunny Chathli, Praise Bansi, and Carl Marenholtz. The team aimed to create a recognizable brand in the poker world, inspired by the Hendon Mob. However, after a period of success, Aikenhead faced another significant losing streak. This downturn led him to sign a contract with Poker Farm, backed by Matchbook. Unfortunately, Matchbook decided to close its poker division, focusing instead on sports betting. Disillusioned with poker and doubting his skills, Aikenhead turned to the restaurant business. He found a suitable building, invested heavily in renovations, and opened a pub, marking a new chapter in his life.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
