Ilya Pavlov's Big Win: Emotions, Strategy, and Life in Montenegro
Ilya Pavlov, known as Pokanuktus, recently won $787,000 at a high-stakes poker tournament on Cyprus. This victory marks a significant milestone in his poker career, which includes a previous big win of $250k in an online tournament in 2017. Pavlov, who runs the RSB Team foundation, shared his experiences and insights from the tournament, highlighting the emotional intensity and strategic challenges he faced.
Pavlov lives in Montenegro and is married to Dar'ya. He mentioned that the emotional highs of offline poker are significantly greater than those of online poker. The physical presence of opponents and the inability to hide emotions make offline tournaments more intense. He recalled a moment when his wife rushed to hug him after his win, bringing him to the brink of tears. The emotional rollercoaster continued as he faced several tough decisions during the tournament.
One of the most notable hands involved a bluff with KQ against an opponent he underestimated. Pavlov also mentioned a hand against Dario Sammartino where he hit a backdoor flush on the river. Another confusing hand involved an amateur player where Pavlov had a full house but decided to fold due to the player's unconventional moves. Pavlov also shared a hand against Selahaddin Bedir where Bedir checked behind with a top set, leaving Pavlov puzzled. Despite these challenges, Pavlov's strategic decisions and emotional control helped him secure his victory. He plans to use his winnings to help his parents build a sauna, showcasing his commitment to his family and community. Pavlov also mentioned that he occasionally bets on results and distance with friends, adding a fun and motivational element to his poker life. However, he and his wife Dar'ya are considering moving due to the departure of Stars, highlighting the impact of industry changes on players' lives.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
