Illinois Lawyers Face Triple the Gambling Problems of Average Americans
A recent study commissioned by the Illinois Supreme Court Commission’s Lawyers’ Assistance Program has shed light on a concerning trend among attorneys in Illinois. The study, titled “The Weight of Practice,” found that 3% of all lawyers in Illinois have gambling problems, compared to just 1% of the general public.
The report highlights various mental health and well-being challenges faced by lawyers, including gambling, alcohol use, substance use, and workplace stress. According to the study, 30% of problematic gamblers report a negative impact on their personal lives. Those aged 25 to 35 are the most likely to have problems.
Additionally, the study found that 53% of lawyers gambled weekly, while another 12% said they gamble daily. This comes as Illinois has seen a growing gaming landscape over the last few years, with the state legalizing sports betting in 2019 and Bally’s opening a Chicago casino in 2023.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
