Igor Kurganov Loses $23,900 in High-Stakes Poker but Gains Charity Fame

Igor Kurganov, a renowned high-stakes poker player, recently returned to action at the Lodge Card Club in Austin, Texas. The Russian poker star played a $50/$100 cash game with a $100 ante and $950 in the pot before the action started. Unfortunately, the evening didn't go as planned for Kurganov, as he ended up $23,900 down at the end of play.

Kurganov's charity work has also been a significant part of his recent headlines. In 2014, he and his long-time girlfriend Liv Boeree set up Raising For Effective Giving, an organization dedicated to effective altruism. This work led to a friendship with Elon Musk, with Kurganov being tasked with overseeing charitable donations for the Tesla founder.

However, infighting in Musk's inner circle led to Kurganov being targeted by Musk's right-hand man, Jared Birchall. Despite the challenges, Musk ultimately gave Kurganov control of a $5.7bn fund earmarked for charitable causes, highlighting Kurganov's commitment to philanthropy.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
