HoldemManager and PokerTracker Update Statistical Calculation Methods

HoldemManager and PokerTracker have both updated their statistical calculation methods, affecting key indicators such as VPIP, PFR, 3Bet, 4Bet, and Resteal. HoldemManager changed the calculation method for these indicators in late May, excluding hands where the player could not take any action. For example, if a player is on the big blind and all other players have folded, the player's PFR, 3Bet, and Resteal statistics will not be affected.

PokerTracker introduced a similar calculation method in its third version as an optional add-on. Professional players Decay, Gump, and Aleseed noted minimal impact from the changes. Decay stated, "I didn’t notice any changes; I play by feel." Gump mentioned, "I didn’t notice any changes. Maybe because HM didn’t update. Stats might be more indicative now." Aleseed commented, "In cash games, there are no changes; in MTTs, such situations occur once in 100 hands. So it’s not important. It might affect SNGs, but even there, such situations are rare, and if you’re a regular SNG player, you already know all the regulars and play based on your history with them."

HoldemManager's changes were implemented on May 21, with no interaction with PokerTracker. PokerTracker's Steve McLaflin explained that the changes were made to better reflect actual gameplay situations. He noted that the old method of calculating VPIP included situations where a player on the big blind had no option but to call or fold, which is not a true reflection of voluntary action. The new formula for VPIP is [(cnt_vpip / (cnt_hands – cnt_walks)) * 100], which excludes situations where the player had no voluntary action. Additionally, HoldemManager increased prices for HoldemManager 2 Pro and OmahaManager 2 Pro from $89 to $99, and Pro Combo from $149 to $159.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
