Guy Laliberté's Million-Dollar Online Poker Losses and Controversies
Guy Laliberté's online poker career was marked by both significant achievements and substantial losses. He played the most expensive limits on Full Tilt and took fourth place in the WPT Championship. In the fourth season of High Stakes Poker, a special game was organized for Laliberté with a buy-in of $500k.
Laliberté played 77 hands on High Stakes Poker with VPIP/PFR statistics of 61/8 and won $188,950. In his largest hand, he allowed David Benjamin to take approximately $500,000 from the pot and lost a huge pot to Doyle Brunson. In 2012, Laliberté participated in the first $1,000,000 tournament at the World Series and made it into the money.
Despite these achievements, Laliberté's online poker career was plagued by significant losses. He lost $31 million over his online poker career and described online poker as the most foolish expenditure of money in his life. After Black Friday, Laliberté stated that he did not deposit any money into online poker. Mike Matousov admitted in a 2011 interview that professionals sometimes collaborated against Laliberté, but Haralabos Vulgaris criticized the notion that players colluded against him.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
