Gambling Industry Braces for Job Losses as Tax Hike Looms
The gambling industry in the UK is facing potential job losses due to a proposed tax hike. The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has warned that an increase in the Machine Games Duty (MGC) from 20% to 40% could threaten up to 3,800 jobs. The Council estimates that the gambling sector directly employs more than 10,000 people and supports an additional 3,700 jobs, contributing £515m ($682.2m) in taxes annually.
The BGC's Chief Executive, Grainne Hurst, described the tax hike as an 'existential threat to casinos across Britain,' stating that it would impact thousands of hardworking people and directly affect venues that have been operating for decades.
In other regulatory news, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has introduced a new proposal that seeks to exclude casino-style gambling from prediction market platforms. This move comes as prediction market platforms face increased scrutiny and legal challenges at the state level. The CFTC's proposal expands the definition of 'swap' to include event contracts tied to politics, sports, cultural events, and weather.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
