Enrique Alejo Discusses Online Gambling Taxation and Regulatory Challenges
Enrique Alejo, Director General of Ordenación del Juego, discussed the taxation of online gambling winnings in an interview with Cinco Días. The DGOJ has forwarded player concerns about the taxation of gambling winnings to the Dirección General de Tributos. Players are unsure whether they should pay taxes on each withdrawal or on the total winnings, and they cannot deduct losses.
The DGOJ is investigating whether operators have complied with regulations regarding the transfer of data and funds from .com to .es domains. Alejo mentioned that the DGOJ is working on an international liquidity agreement with Italy and France, but details on timing and other countries are not yet clear. The DGOJ has a list of 70 illegal websites and plans to work with telecommunications operators to block them, acknowledging the technical difficulties.
Alejo also touched on the challenges of regulating the online gambling market, noting that it is difficult to control all illegal operators due to the global nature of the industry. The DGOJ is committed to enforcing regulations and protecting players, but acknowledges the complexities involved.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
