Elon Musk Appoints Igor Kurganov to Manage Billions in Philanthropy
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has appointed Igor Kurganov to manage his philanthropic donations. Kurganov, a former high-stakes poker player and activist for effective altruism, will oversee the distribution of funds from Musk's foundation.
In November 2021, Musk donated $5.7 billion through his foundation, a significant increase from previous years. The foundation, which has been active for 20 years, supports various causes including renewable energy, space research, artificial intelligence, and medicine. Additionally, the foundation has allocated $100 million to combat global warming and several million to research COVID-19 mitigation strategies.
Kurganov co-founded the Raising for Effective Giving (REG) foundation in 2014, which promotes effective altruism. Notable poker players such as Justin Bonomo, Erik Seidel, and Martin Jacobson have supported REG by donating a portion of their winnings to the cause. In 2017, Kurganov and his partner Liv Boeree won bracelets at the WSOP team event and donated 50% of their $274,000 prize money to charity.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
