Doug Polk vs. Alex Torelli: GTO vs. Intuition in High-Stakes Poker
In a recent high-stakes poker hand at Casino Bike, Doug Polk and Alex Torelli, both prominent poker vloggers, demonstrated two different approaches to decision-making: Game Theory Optimal (GTO) and intuition-based play. The hand took place in a $25/$50 cash game with a $100 straddle.
Alex Torelli raised to $325 with two black jacks, and Doug Polk re-raised to $1,025 with 8c 6c. Ron Israel, on the big blind with Ac Qd, folded after some thought. The player who posted the straddle checked their cards, found 9x 8x offsuit, and quickly folded. Torelli, with approximately $15k stack, called Polk's re-raise.
Polk explained that 3-betting with suited connectors like 8c 6c helps balance the range and maintain post-flop playability. On the flop of 7d As 2s, Torelli checked, and Polk bet $1,250, which Torelli called. On the turn of 3d, Polk bet $3,175, and Torelli called again. Polk discussed the importance of having a balanced range and the considerations for bluffing and value betting.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
