Doug Polk's ClubWPT Gold Pivot: Training Site or Legal Grey Area?
ClubWPT Gold has recently undergone significant changes, rebranding itself as a poker training site and introducing a new currency model. The operator has removed Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins, leaving only one type of currency for players to use at the tables, simply called Chips. This pivot comes amidst an increasingly unfavorable climate for sweepstakes sites, notably highlighted by the upcoming California sweepstakes ban set to take effect in 2026.
Doug Polk, a prominent ambassador for ClubWPT Gold, took to Twitter/X to engage with the community, asking those who haven't signed up with the site to share their reasons. Polk's intention was to gather feedback and push for changes, but the recent transition to a training site model hasn't resonated well with players. Despite Polk's best efforts, he couldn't provide a clear explanation for the changes.
In response to players' concerns about the sweepstakes model and potential government interventions, Polk stated that “we won’t be under the sweepscoins thing anymore.” This statement, while somewhat reassuring, also raises new questions. ClubWPT Gold is attempting to blend a training site with a player-versus-player practice platform that allows winnings to be exchanged for cash. Players can purchase hand analysis credits, which are rewarded with free Chips, and use these Chips to play poker and redeem actual cash prizes at a one-to-one rate.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
