Derek Walters Shares His Decade-Long Experience Buying Poker Stakes
Derek Walters has been an active participant in the poker community, buying stakes in tournaments for nearly a decade. With almost 5,000 deals under his belt, Walters has developed a keen eye for evaluating players and managing his investments.
Evaluating Players and ROI
Walters primarily focuses on American players, with approximately 80% of his deals involving American tournaments. He evaluates the return on investment (ROI) using data and intuition, categorizing players into three groups: average, good, and excellent. This method helps him identify the best opportunities and make informed decisions.
Managing Investments
When it comes to managing his investments, Walters often buys larger stakes to smooth out variance. However, the percentage set by the player often limits the size of the stake he can purchase. He also noticed that stakes in tournaments with similar buy-ins were sold at roughly the same prices, despite the actual advantage of the player varying significantly between tournaments.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
