Derek Walters Shares His Biggest Poker Losses

Professional poker player Derek Walters recently shared stories of his significant losses, highlighting that losing large sums is always painful. He recounted four memorable losses:

$1,000 Loss

In 2007, Walters lost $1,000 while playing online tournaments. He had been playing $5-10 tournaments and $0.25/$0.5 cash games, accumulating a bankroll of around $2,000. He decided to move up to $0.5/$1 but was quickly defeated and stopped playing when his balance dropped to $800.

$10,000 Loss

In 2011, Walters lost $10,000 during the World Series of Poker. He had a bankroll of $100,000 and spent $20,000 on buy-ins but did not make it to the prizes. He sold 50% of his main event for $1.05 and was eliminated within four hours, feeling shocked and disappointed.

$100,000 Loss

In 2014, Walters lost $100,000 over 12 months. Despite his significant earnings from 2012 to 2014, this loss affected his confidence and understanding of variance. He began to negotiate more aggressively to secure better deals.

$1,000,000 Loss

In 2017, Walters experienced a paper loss of $1,000,000 due to the Bitcoin market crash. He had accumulated a significant amount of Bitcoin since 2013 and used it for online gambling. The market crash led to a loss of his million-dollar fortune, and he had to start over.

Other notable players also shared their significant losses. HaraLabos Vulgaris mentioned losing $100 million on paper in March 2021. Dan Smith recalled losing a six-figure sum to zero due to overconfidence and a downswing. Tony Dunst lost $120,000 over 4-6 weeks in 2008 while betting on sports. John Aguyiar lost $100,000 in 2008 while playing high-stakes poker. Brian Hastings lost $100,000 in 2008 in a high-stakes game against Guy Laliberte and Zhen Deng. Daniel Weinman shared losses of $1,000, $10,000, and $100,000 in various poker games. Isaac Haxton recalled losses of $1,000, $10,000, and $100,000 in different poker games. Scott Seiver mentioned Derek Walters losing $100,000 in 2007 against Tom Dwan.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
