December Poker Tournaments: Pobal's Victory and Foxen's Phenomenal Run
December 2019 was a month of intense poker action, with two major series taking center stage: the European Poker Tour (EPT) in Prague and the WPT Five Diamond in Bellagio.
At the EPT Prague, Nikolay Pobal from Belarus emerged victorious in the main event, securing €1,005,600. This win marked Pobal's second major EPT title, having previously won the main event in Barcelona seven years ago. Pobal's journey to the top was not without drama. In the top 4, he had only 12 blinds left but managed to double up against Gabi Livshits and then eliminated him in a crucial 3-bet pot. The key hand in the final saw Norbert Sechi bluff with 8-high and a blocker to a straight, while Pobal called with a better hand, ultimately securing his victory.
Meanwhile, at the WPT Five Diamond in Bellagio, Alex Foxen made headlines with his impressive performance. Foxen won the main event and topped the GPI year-end rankings, solidifying his status as one of the top players in the game. His aggressive playing style, however, drew mixed reviews from fellow players. Andrey Pateychuk criticized Foxen's approach, noting that while it works well in weaker fields, it might not hold up against stronger players. Garik Yaroshvsky, however, praised Foxen's improvement and confidence, highlighting his significant progress over the past few years.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
