Danish Supreme Court Orders Man to Forfeit Online Poker Winnings

The Danish Supreme Court has ordered a 35-year-old unemployed man to hand over 194,000 kroner (40,000 USD) he won from online poker to the state. The man's online poker winnings were his only source of income, which is against Danish laws prohibiting living solely on gambling income. The High Eastern Court had previously exempted the man from a 5,000 kroner (1,000 USD) fine due to the uncertainty surrounding the legality of online poker.

The court ruled that although the servers were outside Denmark, the user's computer was within the country, making the activity subject to Danish laws. Approximately 50,000 Danes are engaged in online poker, according to pokernet.dk.

General Prosecutor Sven Larsen stated that the case will be decided individually for each person involved in professional gambling.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
