Daniel Negreanu: Luck, Responsibility, and Mindset in Poker
In April 2015, Daniel Negreanu wrote a post about luck, two months before his second 11th place finish in the WSOP 2015 main event. He mentioned Jordan Spieth, a golfer who missed a shot in the PGA tournament due to a camera shutter click. Negreanu compared this situation to poker players who blame bad luck for their losses, emphasizing the importance of taking responsibility for one's actions and learning from mistakes.
Negreanu discussed how perception influences reality and how one can choose to see events as lucky or unlucky. He shared an example from his poker career, involving Mike Matousov, who believed his bad luck was the reason for his losses. Negreanu used this belief to his advantage, bluffing Matousov in situations where he thought he was unlucky.
Negreanu concluded that events are neutral and only become good or bad based on one's perspective. He also wrote another post after his WSOP 2015 performance, discussing two mistakes he made during the tournament. Negreanu believes that professional golfers and poker players are distinguished by their ability to minimize the impact of their mistakes, rather than the number of perfect shots or hands they play.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
