Daniel Cates' Wild Ride: From Poker Bankroll Confiscation to Real Estate Nightmare
Daniel Cates, a well-known poker player, has had his fair share of financial ups and downs. In one of his most significant setbacks, Cates had $4 million, which was 80% of his bankroll, confiscated by the government due to Full Tilt's violations.
Cates also faced challenges with his investments. He sold his pending bankroll to Tom Dwan for 80 cents on the dollar, but the deal was later adjusted. Despite these setbacks, Cates continued to explore new investment opportunities.
One of Cates' most ambitious projects was investing $1 million in a real estate venture on the Hollywood Hills. He expected to earn $2 million in return, but the project turned into a nightmare. Cates had to pay $40,000 monthly for the unfinished property, which was supposed to be a lucrative investment. Additionally, he paid $1 million bail for an unnamed individual arrested by the FBI for illegal gambling, further straining his finances.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
