Canada Considers Banning Gambling Ads During Hockey Games

Canadian lawmakers are moving to crack down on sports betting marketing during game broadcasts, on social media, and in online video games. The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage plans to vote on Bill S-211 this week. The proposal tasks the minister of Canadian Heritage with creating a national advertising structure. He must bring a plan to Parliament within one year.

Bardish Chagger, a member of Parliament (MP) for Waterloo, Ontario, is sponsoring the bill. She believes restrictions on sports betting ads could curb gambling addiction and help prevent potential suicides. “People are being impacted in a very harmful way,” she told the CBC. “They are losing their livelihoods, they’re losing their homes, they’re losing their savings, they’re losing their lives.”

A 2024 CBC study found that viewers saw thousands of ads and logos during just five NHL games. That equated to up to three per minute.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
