Brian Townsend's Poker Journey: From Multi-Accounting Scandal to Isildur1 Showdown

Brian Townsend's poker career took a dramatic turn in March 2008 when he announced a deal between CardRunners and Full Tilt Poker. This partnership significantly altered his trajectory in the poker world. As part of the agreement, Brian and six other key authors from CardRunners were required to play on Full Tilt Poker under 'red' nicknames for at least 10 hours per week.

However, Townsend's journey was not without controversy. In August 2008, he confessed to playing under new nicknames—Stellarnebula on Full Tilt Poker and makersmark66 on PokerStars—for six months. This multi-accounting violation led to a six-month ban from Full Tilt Poker's 'red' status. Townsend expressed remorse and donated $25,000 to charity to compensate for the harm caused to other players.

In September 2008, Townsend set himself a challenging goal: to rebuild his bankroll from $100,000 to $800,000 by playing $25/$50 PLO. He successfully completed this challenge by March 2009, achieving a win rate of 9bb/100 in PLO. Despite facing significant difficulties, including a loss of around $300,000 at the $50/$100 level, Townsend's perseverance paid off.

Townsend's career saw a resurgence in 2009, with notable wins exceeding $2 million, including over $1 million in HORSE games. His analytical skills were also put to the test when he played a significant role in analyzing Isildur1's hands and strategies, assisting Brian Hastings and Cole South. In December 2009, Townsend engaged in a high-stakes session with Isildur1, losing $1.6 million over five days. Despite the loss, Townsend maintained his composure and continued to be a prominent figure in the poker community.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
