Brian Rast Aims for Poker Hall of Fame in 2023 Championship
The 2023 Poker Player Championship, a prestigious mixed games tournament with a $50,000 buy-in, began on June 18. This year's event features some of the biggest names in poker, including Daniel Cates, who won the past two years and dressed up as the Terminator for the occasion. After being eliminated, Cates humorously said 'I'll be back,' echoing the famous Terminator line.
Matthew Ashton made a significant impact on the first day, winning an absurd hand in 2-7 Single Draw. Ashton raised from the button, and his opponent called and changed two cards. Ashton did not change his cards, and after receiving his cards, his opponent led with a bet three times the size of the pot. Ashton raised it three times more, and after some thought, his opponent called but did not beat Ashton's second nut hand.
Josh Arie finished the first day as the chip leader with 1,088,000 chips, followed by Phil Ivey with 955,500 and James Obst with 929,500. Dmitry Urbanovich, representing Russia, started the second day with a short stack of 158,500 chips. Phil Hellmuth made a notable call against Ben Yu in No-Limit Hold'em, ultimately folding to Yu's bluff. Hellmuth showed remarkable resilience, playing with a short stack throughout the day but avoiding elimination.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
