From Lab to Poker Table: Arseny 'josef_shvejk' Karmatsky's Unlikely Journey
Arseny 'josef_shvejk' Karmatsky, a 27-year-old, finished the season in fourth place in the global tournament ranking of Pocketfives, the best result among Russians. Karmatsky decided to take a three-month academic leave to focus on poker and traveling. He was involved in the development of organic solar batteries, synthesizing various dyes for them.
Karmatsky's journey into poker began modestly, playing at home with friends and later moving to online platforms like PokerStars. He won a ticket to the EPT in Prague in December 2013, his first live poker event. This experience was pivotal, as he interacted with notable poker figures and gained valuable insights.
Karmatsky's academic work involved writing a dissertation, which he found challenging and stressful. His decision to focus on poker was influenced by the lack of connection between his academic research and real-world applications. He found that his work in the lab often lacked practical outcomes, which was a significant factor in his transition to poker.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
