Alabama's Sports Betting Future Brightens as Pro-Gambling Candidates Win Primaries

Major online sportsbooks like DraftKings and FanDuel have invested heavily in Alabama's Republican primary, backing pro-gambling candidates who won. This could pave the way for sports betting legalization in the state.

The American Conservative Fund, backed by major sportsbook operators, spent $9.3 million in the primary. A majority of the candidates supported by the American Conservative Fund won the primary.

Alabama's 1901 constitution prohibits lotteries and gambling, and the state has no commercial gaming operations. Sen. Merika Coleman (D) filed a bill in March 2024 allowing voters to decide on adding a lottery and expanding legal gambling options. A 2020 report found that legalized gambling would generate up to $700 million in tax revenue and create 19,000 new jobs in Alabama.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
