8 Psychological Traps in Poker: How to Avoid Them

The article was written by the Redação team of Brasil Poker.

Poker is known as the “Esporte da Mente” due to its psychological aspects. The mental part of the game is very important for you to be able to put your strategy into practice and make your best game. Here are eight psychological traps to avoid during your poker sessions.

1. Distractions

Distractions can lead players to 'Tilt', a state of emotional frustration. It could be a specific situation, an obsessive thought, an emotional reaction, or all of these combined. Maintaining your focus on the game requires mental training and experience. Organize your strategy and consider your reactions to various game situations!

2. Procrastination

Players should avoid skipping fundamental experiences and planning in poker. Many players try to skip steps, missing out on essential experiences and planning for becoming a good poker player, both online and live. Don't put off the opportunity to accumulate hours of play, study, and improve your game. This could be the difference between you and the next villain.

3. Fear

Fear can sabotage a player's confidence and lead to regular mistakes. Players can have their game affected by both failure and success. Many times, fear sabotages confidence, leading players to make mistakes they wouldn't normally make. In other cases, excessive confidence impairs game reading.

4. Focus

Playing distracted, as mentioned in the first topic, is something to be avoided. Leave distractions out of your gaming environment and make good use of breaks.

5. Lack of Goals

Planning is fundamental for emotional balance, game reading, and focus. Your goals will help you read your game and plan your next steps. Establish your strategies and goals for a certain period and start comparing your performance over time.

6. Ego

Excessive confidence can impair a player's game reading. Many players use confidence as a form of intimidation, but this is not always synonymous with success. At the same time, lack of confidence can bring factors such as excessive concern with emotional control and fear of getting involved in good hands.

7. Bankroll

Not controlling your bankroll makes it harder to implement aggressive strategies.

8. Feeling like an easy target

Players should avoid reacting impulsively to feeling challenged. Remember that in poker nothing is personal, control your reactions to play your best!

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
