Why Cricket Betting Remains Illegal in India Despite Massive Popularity

Cricket is extremely popular in India, with millions of fans. Betting on cricket is illegal throughout India. There are still plenty of grey market options available for cricket betting in India.

The world of sports betting has grown exponentially over the last decade, particularly online. There are offshore betting sites servicing many of the 400 million Indians who watch sport every year, but nothing within the country itself except for those who offer odds on horse racing.

The entire country, and certainly all of the politicians, are aware of the underground cricket betting scene. Every year, underground bookies in India relocate to out-of-the-way small towns and set up new phone accounts in the names of their customers to take bets for major cricket series. Even the police are saying anonymously that legalisation is the only way forward as they stand next to no chance of catching the dodgy bookmakers.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
