The Pioneers of WCOOP 2002: A Look Back at the First Online Poker Championship
The first World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) was held in mid-summer 2002, marking the inaugural year of PokerStars. This event was a pivotal moment in the history of online poker, as it signaled PokerStars' commitment to tournament poker.
Nick 'fingaz' White, a Las Vegas resident, became the first online poker world champion by winning the first WCOOP tournament. White, who began his online poker career in 1998 on Planet Poker, later transitioned to PokerStars. His online poker journey was significantly impacted by Black Friday, which led him to focus more on offline poker.
Chips76, who finished second in the first WCOOP tournament, was known for his friendly demeanor and good sportsmanship. He actively played until 2007, when the UIGEA legislation affected his career. Canuck, the winner of the second WCOOP tournament, specialized in Omaha poker and had significant earnings from later WCOOP tournaments. Spiros '55lucky55' Mitrokostas, a professional poker player and restaurant owner, has nearly $500,000 in online poker winnings but a negative ROI.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
