Texas Busts Illegal Gambling Ring Using Pokemon and Sports Cards
In a significant crackdown on illegal gambling, law enforcement in Bexar County, Texas, recently raided seven establishments suspected of operating as part of an organized criminal syndicate. The raids, led by Sheriff Javier Salazar, resulted in the seizure of between 500 and 600 illegal gambling devices.
The illegal gambling dens used a unique method to circumvent Texas laws. Instead of paying out winnings in cash, they awarded players with Pokemon or sports trading cards, which players could then exchange for cash at nearby businesses. This method allowed the venues to avoid state regulations that prohibit payouts exceeding ten times the player's bet.
During the raids, law enforcement identified the criminal group with the brand "777". A total of 23 people were initially detained, with 13 facing serious charges, including felony drug possession, misdemeanor warrants, and engaging in organized criminal activity.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
