Poker in Las Vegas: A Memorable Trip with Cash Games and Chess
The author's journey to Las Vegas began with a realization that his tournament performances were not up to par, leading him to focus on cash games. The decision was further influenced by the lack of 'technical preparation' for registering in the Main Event.
One evening, after missing out on a spot at the Aria casino, the author found himself at the Bellagio, where a cash game quickly fell apart. A drunken regular and an intellectual tire producer for racing cars both left the game, ending it prematurely. The author then headed to Bobby’s Room to play chess with a local regular named Mike. Despite giving Mike a time advantage, the author lost two games due to blunders but managed to win the next two, securing a draw in their mini-match.
The following day, the author returned to the Aria casino, which became his favorite spot. The Aria is noted for its high-stakes cash games, often featuring players like London Ali, known as 'Bald Ali,' who organizes these games during the World Series of Poker. The author also encountered a Greek businessman named Vasily, who was described as a friendly but optimistic player, often going all-in with less-than-ideal hands. Despite his optimistic play, Vasily sometimes won with unusual combinations, earning praise from a Mexican regular named Koko.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
