Poker Pros Debate: Is Head-to-Head Play Useless for MTT Success?
Patrick Leonard recently asked professional MTT players to rank five key skills in order of importance: studying head-to-head play, working with a psychology coach, optimizing nutrition and physical condition, volume of play, and understanding ICM.
David 'ODB' Baker ranked volume of play and psychology as the most important, while Hailey Hanna emphasized the importance of understanding ICM, especially in final tables. Barry McGovern highlighted the importance of physical health and mental clarity for consistent high results. João Simão stated that volume of play is crucial for professional success in MTT.
Samantha Greenwood noted that head-to-head play is often underestimated but crucial for understanding chipEV. Jason @jasonteam651 pointed out that understanding head-to-head play can significantly improve post-flop skills. Aaron Barone criticized those who rank physical fitness lower than studying head-to-head play. Herman @hvdm1987 emphasized that head-to-head play, ICM, and volume of play are the most important skills. Francois Amel, a professional poker psychologist, ranked psychology and physical form as the most important. Rod Gaurav highlighted the importance of physical and psychological stability for maintaining large volumes of play. Jordan Smith believes that volume of play is the only important factor for earning in MTT. Zachary Ryan ranked ICM and volume of play as the most important, with physical form and psychology following.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
