Poker Players React to the 2020 US Election: Memes, Bets, and Surprises

Poker players from around the world had plenty to say about the 2020 US presidential election. While the political world was abuzz with the historic event, poker players found time for personal milestones and plenty of bets.

Personal Milestones and Political Bets

In early November, Spraggy, a member of PokerStars Team Online, shared some exciting personal news. He proposed to his girlfriend, Marli Cordeiro, and she said yes. Spraggy even joked about relying on a Biden win to solve his financial problems, saying he made a bet on Biden winning the election.

Poker Players React to Election Results

As the election results came in, many poker players took to social media to share their thoughts. Doug Polk noted the discrepancy between polls and actual election results, saying that if Trump won Wisconsin with a 3% lead when polls showed an 8.5% lead for Biden, it would be one of the biggest polling errors in history. Kevin Martin compared the US election to a poker hand, breaking down the phases before and after the election. Doyle Brunson referenced the 'silent majority' after initial election results favored Trump, while Barney Boatman compared Trump's request to stop the vote count to a poker player asking not to deal the river.

Betting on the Election

Many poker players also placed bets on the election. Mike Matuos' tweet supporting Trump's call to stop the vote count was censored. Jason Mercier criticized betting on Biden with small odds, saying it was like betting on a big favorite in the NFL who is down by 4.5 points. Scott Blumstein jokingly suggested living in a simulation after his WSOP win, and Tom Dwan joked about betting on a 269-269 electoral vote tie. Pads found betting on the election more entertaining than tournament poker, while Brian Rast expressed concern for friends who bet heavily on the election.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
