Poker Tournaments in August 2020: A Wave of Overlays
August 2020 was a challenging month for poker rooms due to the high number of overlays in tournament series. PokerStars' Stadium Series, for instance, had a total guaranteed prize pool of $50,000,000 across 102 tournaments. However, the series faced significant overlays, with PokerStars paying $1.2 million in the first two weeks alone.
The Weekly Final Medium tournament on PokerStars had an overlay of $370,800 on its second week, while the Weekly Final Low had 8,233 entries on its first week and 7,808 on its second, both failing to meet their guarantees.
partypoker's WPT Opener tournament for $109 had an overlay of over $165,000, and the Opener Micro for $11 had an overlay of $523,620 in total. GGпокерок's Colossus tournament for $400 exceeded its guarantee by 1.5 times, collecting nearly $4.8 million. However, GGпокерок faced technical issues during the first days of its World Series of Poker Online, including server downtime due to a DDOS attack. PokerMatch's anniversary tournament had an overlay of over 90% of its guarantee, with only 350,000 гривен collected out of a 4,000,000 гривен guarantee. PokerMatch's CEO Руслан Бангерт explained that the high overlay was due to the tournament's unique structure and promotional nature.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
