Poker Legends Share Their Nostalgic Memories of the Early Days
PokerStars conducted a nostalgic poll in early March, asking players how long they have been playing poker without specifying exact dates. The poll garnered over 300 responses from both well-known regulars and casual players.
Early Days and Iconic Moments
Andrew Tang recalled that there were no iPhones when he started playing poker. Chris Moneymaker shared a humorous anecdote about Daniel Negreanu having his own hair, Phil Hellmuth brushing his teeth topless on the street, and Josh Arie being a modest guy.
Andrew Barber mentioned SNGPT, comparing it to 'Let There Be Range' for SNG. Marty Mathis received SNGPT as a gift for his 18th birthday and learned more from its description than from any other available source. Jason Mercier mentioned grinding Hubbles freerolls, and Teecoy was considered the best MTT player at the time.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
