Phil Ivey Opens Up About Poker, Health, and Controversies in New Interview

Phil Ivey, one of the most renowned poker players, recently sat down for an interview where he delved into various aspects of his life and career. The interview, conducted by Thomas Kiling, covered a range of topics from his early days in poker to his current health initiatives and controversies.

Early Poker Days and Personal Life

Phil Ivey learned to play poker from his grandfather, who taught him how to extract coins from a piggy bank. He also admitted to using fake documents to enter casinos before he was of legal age, a practice he strongly advises against. Despite these early experiences, Ivey has maintained a strong presence in the poker world, occasionally enjoying games like craps but not as frequently as before.

Poker Hall of Fame and Friends

When asked about the Poker Hall of Fame, Ivey expressed that he does not want to be the youngest member and prefers to wait. He also named Daniel Negreanu, Barry Greenstein, and Patrik Antonius as his best friends in poker, emphasizing the importance of choosing friends wisely, especially at high stakes. Ivey also discussed his recent health initiatives, including a year-long bet to abstain from alcohol and a vegetarian bet that he bought out after 10 days.

Controversies and Future Goals

Ivey addressed rumors about his financial situation, clarifying that he does not know Dan Bilzerian personally and is not concerned about the rumors. He also expressed support for the WSOP and mentioned that he is developing the educational site Ivey League. Regarding his future goals, Ivey believes he can win 30 bracelets if he continues to play in the World Series of Poker. He also discussed his image and acknowledged that he previously avoided interviews and photoshoots to focus on his game.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
