Phil Galfond: From College Student to Poker Pro

Phil Galfond, a renowned professional poker player, recently shared his journey from a college student to a poker pro. Born in Maryland, Galfond studied at the University of Wisconsin before diving into the world of poker. His introduction to the game was influenced by a friend who won $30,000 in a tournament on partypoker, which sparked his interest and led him to register on the 2+2 forum.

Galfond's early poker days were marked by a series of significant events. He started playing $10 SNGs with a $50 bankroll and lost it immediately. However, he quickly learned the importance of bankroll management and began to take the game more seriously. His first useful poker book was "Hold'Em Poker for Advanced Players" by Sklansky, which helped him rethink his approach to the game.

As Galfond's skills improved, he began to play higher-stakes tournaments and eventually transitioned to cash games after a suggestion from Peter Jetten. He took training sessions from Emil "WhiteLime" and Tommy Angelo, which further honed his abilities. Galfond attributes his success to a combination of natural talent and hard work, emphasizing the importance of investing in training and learning from experienced players.
