Patrick Antonius: Live Poker is Back in the USA, But Europe Remains Closed
Patrick Antonius, a renowned poker player, recently shared his thoughts on the return of live poker. He mentioned that while live poker is making a comeback in the USA, Europe remains closed. Antonius played poker during the pandemic in closed games and in Dubai, expressing his eagerness to return to the USA this summer.
Early Life and Sports Background
Born in 1980 in Finland, Antonius had a simple childhood focused on sports. His parents, who were active themselves, introduced him to various sports. Antonius' mother worked in a kindergarten, and his father was a truck driver. Antonius lived in Vantaa, Finland, near the only casino in the country where he could play poker. This proximity to the casino played a significant role in his early introduction to the game.
Antonius started playing poker at the age of 12 with friends, initially playing games like 5-card stud with unusual betting rules. He won his first poker tournament at the age of 18, playing NLHE with a $15-20 buy-in. Antonius made his first online poker deposit of $200 in 1999 and grew it to $30k in two months. His early poker strategy was highly aggressive, always raising and betting on the flop. Antonius worked various jobs as a teenager, including delivering magazines and working in telemarketing, which taught him valuable lessons about work ethic and financial management.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
