Ohio Moves Closer to Banning Credit Cards for Sports Gambling

Ohio is inching closer to implementing a ban on credit card use for sports gambling. The proposed rule, which has already undergone a public consultation period, is awaiting final approval from relevant authorities. The public consultation window for the credit card ban for the purposes of sports gambling closed on May 15, with no pushback from operators.

Many sportsbooks have begun phasing out credit card deposits nationwide in the United States. This shift is part of a broader trend where sportsbooks are moving away from credit card payments, recognizing them as an outdated mode of payment that does not necessarily contribute to their bottom lines. Among the companies to have opted in are DraftKings, FanDuel, Caesars, bet365, and Fanatics, which have introduced restrictions on credit card funding.

OCCC Deputy Executive Director Craig Donahue noted that there has not been any pushback or critical feedback from the public or operators on the proposed rule. This widespread acceptance indicates a growing consensus that credit card use for gambling should be restricted to protect consumers and promote responsible gambling practices.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
