Negreanu's Candid Take: Gambling Taxes, Shot Clocks, and Poker's Future

Daniel Negreanu, the renowned poker player and GGPoker ambassador, recently participated in an AMA on the Poker subreddit, addressing a wide range of topics from gambling taxes to the future of online poker. One of the key points he discussed was the recent changes in US gambling taxes, specifically the reduction of the cap on loss deductions from 100% to 90% included in the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” Negreanu believes there is a 72% chance that these changes will be repealed, predicting that if the new rules remain, the law will likely collapse under its own weight.

When it comes to tournament life, Negreanu is a strong advocate for the use of shot clocks in tournaments with a buy-in of $5,000 or greater. He believes that this will prevent stalling and make the game fairer and more watchable. He also credits the growth of poker to new content creators and streams, noting that this has led to a boom in the game's popularity.

Looking ahead, Negreanu is optimistic about the future of online poker. He believes that it will have to evolve and grow, with operators needing to be creative to keep the ecosystem healthy. He also hints at the possibility of mixed games making their way to GGPoker, a development that fans of non-hold’em formats will likely welcome. Additionally, Negreanu plans to stream the end of the GGPoker WSOP Online Bracelet Series, covering both big buy-in events and possibly some smaller ones.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
