Man Trains Bear to Recognize Poker Hands for Gaming Advantage
Bill Brown, a resident of Pike County, found a bear cub in the woods and began to train it. The bear, which many believed to be quite intelligent, was taught to recognize poker hands and signal Bill using its paws.
The bear was rewarded with food for correct signals and punished with a smack for errors. Bill intended to use the bear's ability to signal poker hands to his advantage in games, particularly against Tom Wilson, who had won significant amounts of money from him.
Bill's plan was discovered by the local minister and elder, who disapproved but kept it secret. They agreed to keep Bill's plan hidden, seeing Tom Wilson as a troublemaker. Bill asserted that he was not teaching the bear to gamble but rather to recognize poker hands, which he believed was morally acceptable.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
