Jeff Garza: From Poker Pro to $20/Hour Worker — His Story
Jeff Garza, a former high-stakes poker player, recently opened up about his life and career in a Reddit post. He revealed that he won seven-figure sums during his poker career, but emotional and psychological issues, as well as the high stakes involved, led him to leave the game.
Garza now works a part-time job earning $20 per hour and lives modestly. He mentioned that he occasionally thinks about participating in the WSOP Main Event, but his most significant online and offline winnings were $150k and $280k respectively.
In his Reddit post, Garza also shared some memorable moments from his poker career. He recalled spitting on Brian Kenny during a game and mentioned that he considered Ike Haxton, Scott Seiver, and Phil Ivey as his most challenging opponents in heads-up games. Additionally, he shared the tragic story of Chad Batista, who died due to alcoholism.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
